Japan Society Presents Ipe: The Culinary Heritage of the Ainu

July 23 @ 7:00 PM EDT

The Ainu, an indigenous group residing in northern Japan, have an incredible, traditional food culture. In particular, Ipe—a central principle of Ainu food culture—relies on a commitment to sustainability and foraging, eating from the bounty of nature, especially Hokkaido’s biodiverse forests and waterways. The Biratori Ainu Culture Preservation Association, which plays a leading role in communicating Ainu heritage, will discuss the history and staples of Ainu cookery, and lead a cooking demonstration on stage. After the talk, you’ll be able to taste a selection of Ainu foods and continue the conversation.
