Talk & Taste: Farm To City To Table—How The City Eats Fresh
October 25, 2023 @ 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM EDT
$25 – $40Essex Market—New York City’s most historic market—is excited to present Talk & Taste: a series that celebrates the past, present and future of food culture in New York City!
Join us for a glimpse into the history of the local growers, makers, and purveyors who keep New York fed. Discover how they have evolved to serve an ever-growing population and increasingly complex supply chain.
We’re planning a lively, cider-fueled discussion that will range from the history of agriculture and farming in and around New York City, to the influence of Native American agriculture in the region, Dutch and colonial farming on the island of Manhattan, and the history of NYC’s evolving food markets.
You’ll meet Dan Pucci, the author of our featured book, American Cider: a Modern Guide to a Historic Beverage, and have the opportunity to have your book signed at the end of the program.
You’ll also meet some real-life “Carbon-Neutral Pirates” of the Hudson River and get a peek at a day in the life of Schooner Apollonia, “a modern cargo sailboat, a carbon-neutral alternative to the exhaust-belching trucks that haul produce and goods” between the Hudson Valley and NYC.
After the panel discussion, moderator Chef Annette Tomei will demonstrate a quick and easy roasted apple and root vegetable soup that highlights the bounty of the Hudson Valley. Better yet, it’s NYC apartment kitchen friendly!
Samples of the soup and another apple-based goody made by Chef Annette, featuring ingredients sourced from Essex Market will be provided.
Local cider and beer will be served with a selection of snacks from Essex Market vendors! (non-alcoholic options also available).
Located in the Lower East Side for over a century, Essex Market has long reflected the vibrant communities of the neighborhood and has been the city’s premier destination for food lovers since the 19th century. Talk & Taste evenings provide a platform to welcome exciting guest speakers–each highlighting our city’s relationship to food like never before, complete with food bites created by Essex Markets’ diverse array of vendors.
We are proud to present this program with sponsorship by If You Care, kitchen and household products. Essex Market offers these programs in partnership with Edible Manhattan magazine and Kitchen Arts & Letters Bookstore, now celebrating 40 years of service. Culinary demonstrations are curated by Annette Tomei of Wander, Eat and Tell Experiences.
If you purchase Admission with a copy of American Cider, you will receive your book at the Essex Market the evening of October 25.
You will not receive a physical ticket for this event. Your name will be on a list when you check in at the Essex Market Kitchen Mezzanine that evening.
About Talk & Taste
Join Essex Market each month as we explore our city’s past, present and future through food. Each evening, we’ll welcome exciting guest speakers– from cookbook authors and chefs to historians, celebrating our talks with food bites provided by Essex Markets’ diverse array of vendors. Originally conceived by the late Anne Saxelby (Saxelby Cheese) from 2015-2018 in our historic building in the Lower East Side, we’re excited to relaunch this series in our new home at Essex Crossing!
