For those willing to travel to Brooklyn to support excellent farming practices, not to mention the farmers themselves and the produce they grow, tonight, Sunday and next Tuesday we suggest you make plans to head to the borough of Kings. Due to a barn fire a few weeks back, the storage, seed and tool shed shared by Hector Tejada of Conuco Farms and Kira Kinney of Evolutionary Organics was destroyed and now the pair have to replace not just much of what they need to farm next year but many of the hearty winter crops they could sell at Greenmarkets in Manhattan and Brooklyn throughout the winter — or else they might lose the businesses they’ve literally been cultivating for years. There are three events over the next few days, an auction tonight at The Commons, a cool artsy space on Atlantic Avenue in downtown Brooklyn, a dinner Sunday at Park Slope’s Palo Santo, and a dinner Tuesday night at iCi in Fort Greene. You can get more details about the events and these two farmers — both of whom maintain their acres with truly sustainably practices as well as an eye toward curating some of the most incredible varieties of vegetables, many of which you can’t find anywhere else — in this New York Times/The Local blog piece by Linnea Covington.
