How We Tested and Ranked Webtoon Platforms

According to Polaris Market Research, the manga market size was estimated at USD 16.30 billion in 2025. The largest market is North America, so it is no surprise that Western readers can choose from dozens of webtoon apps. We evaluated the platforms according to the following criteria:

• Catalog size. We ensure the service offers at least 1,000 episodes for readers to explore. Preferably, the webtoon platform should provide a wide range of genres and include exclusive or original content.
• Pricing model. We review and explain how pricing works on each platform. A flat-rate model is ideal for binge readers, while a coin-based system may suit occasional readers. We also note subscription options and whether premium plans remove ads.
• Translation quality. Machine translation is becoming more common (according to Grand View Research, it’s projected to grow at a CAGR of 13.5% from 2023 to 2030). However, translations produced by native speakers generally preserve jokes, cultural references, wordplay, and visual context more accurately.
• Language support. We check whether the site is English-only or available in multiple languages.
• Reading experience. We evaluate features such as progress tracking, release calendars, push notifications, and overall usability.
• Original content. We note whether the service operates an in-house studio or relies primarily on licensed third-party content.

Honeytoon – Best Webtoon Platform for Studio-Produced Original Content

Honeytoon is one of the webtoon sites for readers who want original, studio-produced stories rather than only licensed or user-generated catalogs. The platform offers 3,000+ episodes and focuses on romance-led serialized comics, including in-house titles from Honeytoon Studio, a Ukraine-based production team.

The catalog includes titles such as My Heavenly Girlfriend, Love Factory, Delicious Blood, and My Beautiful Time with You. Readers can also find HoneyToon’s NSFW teacher-student series in the platform’s separate mature-content area, which is available through age-gated access.

Honeytoon works on a flat-rate subscription model. Instead of buying access to every episode separately, readers can subscribe for 1, 4, 12, or 24 weeks and access all titles included in the plan. Pricing:

• 1 week – $7.99/week;
• 4 weeks – $3.25/week;
• 12 weeks – $1.99/week;
• 24 weeks – $1.69/week.

Honeytoon supports 7 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Traditional Chinese. A strong side of this webtoon app is native human translators. Unlike AI translators, they do not miss out on jokes, cultural references, wordplay, character voices, and visual context.

Adult content: available through a separate age-gated access tier.

Standout feature: Honeytoon Studio produces original in-house webtoons, giving the platform a clearer editorial identity than services built mainly around licensed catalogs.

Pros:

•  Flat-rate subscription plan, which can be more cost-efficient than a coin-based model for active readers.
• 7 content languages, translated by native speakers.
• New original episodes are added weekly.
• In-house studio production gives the catalog a consistent editorial direction.

Cons:

• A smaller choice of supernatural stories than on larger webtoon platforms;
• The library is smaller than those provided by Toomics or Lezhin (however, Honeytoon focuses on its own in-house production while other webtoon sites rely on user-generated content).

Honeytoon is a good match for Western users who want to read original romance stories from a platform with its own production studio. The app will especially suit binge readers, as they can purchase a weekly access plan instead of paying for every episode separately.

• A flat-rate subscription model is available for binge readers;
• Mature stories are available for every user, without being limited to VIP members.

Manga Plus is an online manga reading platform launched in 2019. The site covers a wide range of themes, including Battle, Action, Comedy, Sports, Mystery, Thriller, Romance, Horror, Supernatural, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Romantic Comedy, Drama, Food, History, and Gangsta. Manga Plus also offers dozens of romance stories. This is an advantage, as, according to ICV, romantasy is among the 3 most popular webtoon genres.

Manga Plus offers two subscription plans: Standard ($1.99/month) and Deluxe ($4.99/month). The first month of the Standard plan is free. On the Standard plan, the user can access 100+ titles with 8,000+ chapters. On the Deluxe plan, the choice increases up to 440+ titles and 23,000+ chapters. Both subscription models are ad-free, too. With premium subscription plans, the reader can access new chapters daily.

The Manga Plus app supports 9 languages: English, Spanish, Thai, Portuguese, Indonesian, Russian, French, German, and Vietnamese.

Adult content: the platform strictly prohibits explicit 18+ content. Thus, it is not the best choice for users who are interested in mature romance stories.

Pros:

Which Manhwa Platform Is Right for You?

The choice of the best manhwa site comes down to your preferences. Honeytoon is the strongest match for readers who want original romance stories from an in-house studio and a flat-rate subscription. Manga Plus is a better fit for readers who follow official shonen and mainstream manga releases, while Lezhin suits occasional readers who prefer a coin-based model and a narrower selection of stories.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is an In-House Webtoon?

An in-house webtoon is a digital comic created by a platform’s own studio instead of an independent creator. Platforms like Honeytoon finance and produce these stories internally. They handle the full process from scripting and storyboarding to coloring and editing with dedicated teams.

What genres are most popular in original webtoons?

Popular original manhwa genres are romance, fantasy, action, supernatural, comedy, thriller, and slice-of-life. Romance and fantasy often draw large audiences because they mix emotional stories with creative settings. While trends change, strong ideas and memorable characters remain key factors in a webtoon’s success.

Are original webtoons better than adapted ones?

It depends on the reader’s preferences. Original webtoons often bring fresh concepts and new stories, while adaptations may already have a built-in audience. Both can offer quality experiences, and the better choice comes down to genre, style, and personal taste.
