New Yorkers and peanuts have a history. By 1870, several hundred peanut vendors were already out on our streets selling their wares. In the early 1900s, tearooms like Ye Olde English Coffee House, the Cosey Tea Shop and the Vanity offered delicate tea sandwiches of peanut butter with nasturtiums, watercress or pimiento. Today our ballpark roast peanuts have a new family member: peanut-butter-pretzel-coated thick bacon on a stick. And we (at least those of us without a nut allergy) love it all. It’s surprisingly hard to find a basic, unadorned peanut-butter cookie. More complex versions are easier to find, but the simpler one offers pure, unadulterated joy.
Boiled Peanuts at The Breslin
For fresh green peanuts boiled in their shells, it used to be you’d have to go to the Deep South — though sometimes you can find them at Chinatown street vendors or restaurants. But now there’s a solid source at the Breslin. It’s somewhat surreal to eat boiled peanuts fried in pork fat in this elegant space, but it actually works well.
