10 Sweet and Savory Ways to Celebrate the Mighty Peanut in New York City

New Yorkers and peanuts have a history. By 1870, several hundred peanut vendors were already out on our streets selling their wares. In the early 1900s, tearooms like Ye Olde English Coffee House, the Cosey Tea Shop and the Vanity offered delicate tea sandwiches of peanut butter with nasturtiums, watercress or pimiento. Today our ballpark roast peanuts have a new family member: peanut-butter-pretzel-coated thick bacon on a stick. And we (at least those of us without a nut allergy) love it all. Here are ten delicious ways to celebrate the peanut:

Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop
This classic sandwich is made-by-mom food and has often been bent into strange shapes in thin paper lunchbags. But Eisenberg’s will make you an old-school, unbent, fresh PB&J for the price of (gasp) $3.50.

Ghanaian Peanut (Groundnut) Soup at Accra Restaurant Harlem
This soup is so addictive, it’s basically the definition of delicious — spicy and sweet and rich.

Chipotle Cocktail at Mace
Mace’s Nico de Soto created a cocktail with peanut-butter-fat-washed cognac, smoked pineapple chipotle syrup, lemon juice, strawberry jam and peanuts. Have it with the Saucisson.

Classic Peanut Butter Cookies at Milk and Cookies Bakery
It’s surprisingly hard to find a basic, unadorned peanut-butter cookie. More complex versions are easier to find, but the simpler one offers pure, unadulterated joy.

Boiled Peanuts at The Breslin
For fresh green peanuts boiled in their shells, it used to be you’d have to go to the Deep South — though sometimes you can find them at Chinatown street vendors or restaurants. But now there’s a solid source at the Breslin. It’s somewhat surreal to eat boiled peanuts fried in pork fat in this elegant space, but it actually works well.

Peanut Butter Acai Bowl at Liquiteria
This is the açai bowl that could make you vegan. Bananas, peanut butter and granola come together in a luxurious way. Good to know: There are six locations of Liquiteria all over the city.

Peanut Butter Marshmallow Crunch Ice Cream at Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream
On National Peanut Day, the rule is you can eat all the ice cream you want. There’s also a vegan option here: vegan peanut butter chocolate chip.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Donuts at Doughnut Plant
You know that line “You’ve got one job to do”? It’s not easy at Doughnut Plant, because they have two doughnuts with peanut butter: the peanut butter and blackberry jam filled, and the peanut butter and banana cream filled.

Peanut Brittle at See’s Candies
Just say the words “See’s Candies” and watch people lick their lips in anticipation of sweet pleasure. Luckily for us all, See’s makes peanut brittle!

Peanut Candies at Economy Candy
It’s like winning the peanut candy lottery at Economy Candy because they have 64 different kinds. Remember Squirrel Nut Zippers? Mary Janes? Abba Zabba Bars, Boston Baked Beans and Sky Bars? They’re all here!
