We haven’t yet had a chance to hit the Union Square Greenmarket — which opened as per its normal schedule this morning — so we’re wondering if any readers who have might fill us in on a crop report. Unlike farmers in Eastern North Carolina — who took a serious wallop to their fields — we’re hoping Irene spared our foodshed and especially the rest of 2011 tomatoes and peaches — though her punishing rains came after several weeks where local soils got a soaking and many farmers are in areas still without power. GrowNYC, the nonprofit that runs the markets, says they’ll know more in the next few days after electricity is restored and people can assess and report back on damage, but that today’s market is happily full of farmers. Hopefully now with shoppers, too.
