Meet our Eat Drink Local Week Charitable Partners: GrowNYC & City Harvest

As Eat Drink Local Week approaches–our eight-day tribute to our foodshed begins Saturday, June 23rd–we wanted to introduce our two very special non-profit charitable partners, which have not just helped us to organize this event, but also work tirelessly to support local and seasonal eating and agriculture year-round.

Those are GrowNYC, which runs the city’s incredible Greenmarket program, and also City Harvest, the country’s first food rescue organization, which collects and distributes approximately 33 million pounds of rescued food to the hungry–3.2 million of that from local fields, much of it from city Greenmarkets.

On June 20–tomorrow–from 11 am to 1 pm we’ll be having a kickoff event at Union Square Greenmarket with chef demos and prize giveaways. Then we’ll do it again in Brooklyn, at Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, on Saturday June 23rd.

We encourage you to check out their work if you haven’t already, and to consider donating to one or both groups. In fact Greenmarket’s big fundraiser–Taste of Greenmarket–is Wednesday, June 27. It’ll feature market-inspired dishes and cocktails prepared by over twenty of the city’s finest chefs and mixologists. (For a full list of the chefs and mixologists who’ll be prepping the evening’s decadent dishes and drinks, plus more info on the silent auction and how to get tickets, click here.)

If you want to help in other ways, you can also of course take part in Eat Drink Local week events, or make a reservation at one of the hundreds of restaurants participating with locally sourced prix-fixes: A portion of proceeds will be donated to the above.
