The Monday Reader: The Hummus Conundrum, Elaine’s Food Circa 1981

The subject of serious debate.

In case someone stole the Sunday Times from your lobby or front stoop, we just wanted to let you know there was plenty of great fodder for foodies over the weekend — proof of our theorem that the best stories about the world of edibles often fall outside of the confines of the Dining section. A few of note include the Arab-Israeli battle over the sale of Sabra hummus; many odes to Elaine Kaufman, the proprietress of the eponymously named Upper East Side celeb hangout, including an online rehash of a sad review of the food by Mimi Sheraton in 1981 and a real estate section profile of the cool home of Brooklyn chef/restaurateur Sohui Kim, who owns the Good Fork in Red Hook with her husband Ben Schneider. Plus profiles of the cleaner faces of Canal Street and Times Square, both of which have ramifications for those of us who live to eat.
