Spring, it seems, is happening. We shouldn’t break out the Birkenstocks and throw out our winter coats just yet, but as the temperatures climb a bit higher, there are a lot of great food events to look forward to. New ciders, a gardening conference and the return of Smorgasburg are just around the corner, eager for you to once again want to step outside.
And word to the wise and/or curious: go here if you want to go down an even deeper local event and/or news rabbit hole.
- Last year’s PopUp Dinner Brooklyn sold out in three days. They return on June 11 to a secret Prospect Park location for the “impromptu soirée, outdoor dance party and DIY showcase,” so become a Prospect Park Alliance member to ensure your space at this exclusive gathering.
- Tickets for Stone Barns Center’s annual Sheep Shearing Fest, taking place on April 30, go on sale March 9 at 10 a.m. It’s a day of family-friendly activities, crafts, live music and seasonal fare.
- Vegan Shop-Up is a twice-monthly market that brings together small vendors to sell their wares, which includes a lot of sweets (macarons and chocolates), savory fun (seitan and vegetable-based hot dogs) and even all-natural deodorant. It takes place at Bushwick’s Pine Box Rock Shop on Saturday, March 12, from noon to 6:00 p.m., and at Mooshoes on the Lower East Side on Saturday, March 26, from noon to 5:00 p.m.
- The 32nd annual GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference happens on March 19 at Hostos Community College. Learn and welcome spring with 1,000 fellow gardeners and greening professionals.
- On March 22 at Fine & Raw in Bushwick, get your swap on with fellow makers, foragers and growers. “You’re the judge of what you swap and no money is exchanged,” they say, and past participants have come through with fermented cider and mustard, cured meats and cookies.
- At Brooklyn Kitchen’s Sumo Stew event on March 23, you watch a sumo wrestling fight and eat stew. It’s pretty straight-forward. The food and drink on offer are not your usual sports bar fare, though, with bento boxes from Hakata Tonton, Hibino, City Grit/Birds & Bubbles, and all’onda/Uma Temakeria, desserts by Tomoko Kato of Patisserie Tomoko, and drinks provided by Brooklyn Brewery, Joto Sake—plus even more. Get your $50 ticket for this event, which will take place at Brooklyn Brewery, here.
