For those who didn’t get a ticket to the New York Wine and Food Festival (or those who prefer their fests to be farmy instead of Food Networky), a three-day bash perhaps more up your ally is approaching at The Green Space. Brought to you by WNYC and non-profits Food Karma Projects and Just Food (not bad company), “Lopate and Locavores” is jam-packed with grub-and-wine-fueled talks and demos on some of our city’s greatest achievements in urban agriculture. And yes, as the name suggests, it will be moderated by WNYC radio host Leonard Lopate of the Leonard Lopate Show (who’s chanterelle-slinging Brooklyn kitchen we visited not too long ago in the Spring 2010 issue of Edible Brooklyn).
The not-to-be-missed festival (The Greene Space is at 44 Charlton Street) runs from Sunday, November 7 at 2pm (with a lesson on getting the most from your greens) to a look at raising chickens for eggs on Tuesday, November 9th at 7pm — all conducted by some of the top agricultural voices in our region, like Owen Taylor, the leader of The City Chicken Project. In between, Monday the 8th is all about fermentation — that is, a few of our favorite things (bread, cheese, beer and anything pickled). This is essentially a lesson in cheese making with local dairy farmers, cheese makers, purveyors and servers, like Anne Saxelby and Keith McNally.
Cooking classes, noshing (like on rich local eggs collected by participants), wine and live music will commence throughout, so though it’s not for another week or so, we’d jump on these tix now! Each event is $25 — and can be purchased through The Green Space — but if you sign up for the whole shebang you’ll save $15 with a $60 ticket — sounds hefty but we see it as capital for your rooftop coop.
