If you’re one of the lucky few to have next Monday the 20th off here in Manhattan, consider not the crowds at Rock Center or the windows at 34th and Broadway but a culinary tour through the East Village/Lower East Side, a storehouse of snacks from the city’s finest lox to sensually spiced Malay laksa noodles. It’s from 12 to 3 and led by “Hungry Tiger “chef Deven DeMarco, who likes to call his guided tours Grub Crawls.
We actually first met Deven at M. Wells, where he also works as a server when he’s not catering — which we consider a good sign — and then again at the incredible American v. Euro cheese tastings co-hosted Formaggio Essex and Saxelby Cheese, both LES stalwarts over in the Essex Market. (Which we consider an even better sign.)
The Hungry Tiger’s Monday tour is $75, or $35 if you’re under 11 (it’s BYOD: Buy your own drinks) and you can score tickets right here. Speaking of walking tours of the area, we actually offered our own Googlemap guide to Jewish eats there a few weeks back, drawn from recent stories.
