With so many walk-around tastings and outdoor food markets (the Times reports on Williamsburg’s new waterfront farmers market and snack stop today) it’s hard to remember it was once a big idea to bring together a batch of top city restaurants for street-side tastings to raise money or awareness for a nabe. But back in 1994 Taste of Tribeca was one of the fests with the foresight to ask a few local chefs in the then not-very-well-traveled community to support local schools with a street fair. This Saturday marks the 17th year of the event, which we proudly sponsor. (Look for us at Table 31.) It’s grown up into a fine shindig indeed, and not just because it supports arts and other cool educational programs for PS 150 and PS 234, both local public grade schools: There’s also snacks from Nobu, Locande Verdi, Bouley, WeatherUp Tribeca, Carl’s Steaks, Ward III and countless other cooks.
