Considering the number of orchards gracing the state of New York, the fact that cider is naturally gluten free, and that the idea of cider fits in beautifully with the American folk revival aesthetic, (if you need a wonderfully smart evisceration of Kinfolk by a brilliant food blogger coupled with a kickass onion ring recipe, check out this Lottie and Doof post) it’s kind of amazing that cider didn’t blow up earlier than it did. Cider Week is helping us make up for lost time by gathering the best of local cider just as the leaves are changing, the air is getting cold, and apple season is peaking. We already told you about GrowNYC’s night market, but we couldn’t resist rounding up a few more of the most interesting events.
This Tuesday at 7:00 Jimmy’s No. 43 will offer a sampling of ciders made using Kingston Black apples. These single-varietal ciders will whet your appetite for the week to come, and the pay-as-you-go event can be adapted to any budget.
Kick off Friday with a prix fixe lunch at Murray’s Cheese Bar, then head to the night market and finish in Queens at the launch of Descendent Cidery, NYC’s first urban cidery.
Wake up Saturday and visit Eden Ciders at Frankly Wines, then join Back Forty for a cider tasting walk around with Rowan Jacobson, author of new book Apples of Uncommon Character.
On Wednesday the 29th, head to Northern Spy Food Co. for their annual cider dinner. The restaurant, named after an apple varietal, is offering a menu that features four autumnal courses including celery root gnudi, roasted duck breast with black trumpet mushrooms, and an apple torte with spicedcider sorbet.
