An Upstate Bike Trip That Ends With a Beer (Or Three)

Truly, there is nothing like the promise of a cold beer to encourage me to overcome biking reluctances – namely, flat bike tires and universally unflattering bike shorts. For a cold beer (nay, unlimited cold beers) I can be convinced to bike 25 miles upstate, where the terrain is less endearingly flat than the Hudson River Greenway.

And with six weeks to prepare, it’s even possible than I won’t be passed by a small child (it happened in Brooklyn yesterday; my ego is still smarting). I’m out of excuses—guess it’s time to register for Eat Local NY’s Second Annual Bike to Beer Benefit.

The non-competitive cycling event starts and ends at Captain Lawrence Brewery in Elmsford, NY on September 26. The brewery is located three miles from the Tarrytown train station, and for $5 you can purchase a lifetime permit to take your bike on Metro North. This year there are 55-mile and 25-mile rides, starting at 7:30 A.M. and 9:30 A.M. respectively.

Afterwards, everyone will decompress (compression shorts optional) with unlimited 12-ounce pours at the brewery. They’ll have corn hole and bocce ball for those who can still walk, and food will be available for purchase. Proceeds will all go to the Local Food For All project, an Eat Local NY effort to connect fresh produce with those in need. Don’t feel like biking but curious about the brewery? You can still register and skip the ride—we won’t tell.
