Twenty Slideluck Potshows ago, I met Casey Kelbaugh at Bathhouse Studios in the East Village. That night, my photos were shown at SLPS V–one of the first showings of my Back of the House project in NYC.
Casey was known for inviting a bunch of his fellow photographers over to his apartment (casseroles in hand) to project their recent works on his walls. He decided to expand these evenings and began throwing what he called Slideluck Potshows for the public, inviting a broad spectrum of photographers and home cooks to contribute their work.
Since then, he has continued to curate incredible events that display the works of some of the very best contemporary photographers in the world (among them, many of my heroes) alongside unbeatable potlucks that all the attendees contribute to.
This Saturday Brooklyn will have an opportunity to participate in a Slideluck Potshow for the very first time, and Edible Brooklyn is proud to be a sponsor.
To beef up the event, Casey and his team have gathered some of the best Kings County restaurant chefs and purveyors to create an awesome potluck that will precede a slideshow of the works of top photographers cast under the Manhattan Bridge Archway in DUMBO at 55 Pearl Street. And as luck would have it, this event coincides with the NY Photo Festival.
The evening starts with a tasting hour at 6 p.m. in which $20 VIP ticket holders can sample the borough’s bounty provided by local restaurants and producers such as The General Greene, Red Hook Wine Co., Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, Applewood, Umi Nom, Five Leaves, Brooklyn Brewery, Mama O’s Kimchee, Palo Santo, Scratchbread, Waterfront Ale House, Lunetta and Woodside Bakehouse. At 7 p.m., regular $10 ticket potluckers will get in (and hopefully contribute to!) the potluck and whatevers leftover from the tasting hour, followed by the photo slideshow itself, at 9 p.m.
There are only a limited number of tasting hour tickets left and then it’s open dining for all. Talk about a community table!
Its anticipated that over 1000 people will attend this Slideluck Potshow–hopefully the hugest potluck ever. In fact, Slideluck Potshow is hoping to break the Guinness Book of World Records title for Largest Potluck on Earth (which is just over 600 distinct dishes served). Representatives will be on hand to photograph each contributor with his/her dish. This potluck is passsionate about local, seasonal ingredients and only dishes under that meet these qualifications will be counted. Heck, why not try to promote a healthful and sustainable food system?
