We’ve long been fans of Food52’s crowd-sourced recipes and accompanying kitchen shop provisions. When I was living on the AmeriCorps stipend, I subsisted on their vegan lentil sloppy joes (suggestion: replace the sprouted grain buns with the whitest, most well-preserved buns you can find; the falling-apart bread is more integral to the sloppy joe experience than the beef.) This weekend you can meet the folks behind the popular website in person at their holiday market at the Old Bowery Station.
The market will feature many of the exclusive wares from provisions, but its real draw is the impressive events calendar. On Thursday you can make breakfast buns with Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen and she’ll sign your cookbook afterward. Most of their class offerings could be renamed “How to Survive the Holidays Without Pulling Your Hair Out” — their editors will be around to advise on cooking for vegetarians while satisfying meat eaters, how to throw a low-stress cocktail party, and how to make desserts that actually look as good as they taste.
