We’re still dizzy with a harvest-time high from our first bite of 2010 apples from local farms. Now, imagine all the perfect pies and nights with hot cider ahead if you could bank on a batch of fresh fruit each week, all winter long. As luck would have it, Red Jacket Orchards, the Finger Lakes’ farm known for its wide variety of fruit and crisp juices, is now accepting members for its Winter CSA.
For those who have never joined a CSA before, one that gives you only sure-fire favorites like fruit is a good way to start out — everything’s ready to eat! (Except maybe quince; these ancient apple cousins have to be cooked.) Distribution starts soon — some require you to apply by the 23rd — so sign up now and you may still get those quinces I’m loving from the farm’s first-ever CSA this fall.
The Red Jacket Orchards winter share will run from November to the end of the year in three locations: two in Brooklyn (Fort Greene, Carroll Gardens) and one in Tribeca. Weekly shares come to about $17 a week for a full share, and $10 for a half-share.
