The Chinese Lunar New Year celebration to welcome the year of the Rabbit has begin, with events planned in Manhattan’s Chinatown throughout the next two weeks, including a firecracker frenzy in Sara Roosevelt park today at noon, a parade on Sunday (wait, wasn’t there something else to do on Sunday?) and a lantern festival next week. Expect plenty of red and gold. In between, you’re supposed to eat long uncut noodles, pork, greens, oranges and all kinds of other goodies for good luck, something the Chinese so nicely call “auspicious foods.” Luckily our sister mag Edible Brooklyn captured a run-down of what to eat and why from Buddakan chef and Brooklyn native Yang Huang, in a tasting tour of Sunset Park. Scroll to the end of the story to see his recommendations for the New Year.
