Welcome to Green Week! As such, there are plenty of plant and local food-related events to see the celebration of Earth Day through in style.
GreenThumb and Just Food will host a session on maintaining raised beds. The Astor Center holds a panel and tasting on “Green Beef” where a food historian, a documentarian, a farmer, and a chef will go over the benefits (both environmental and taste-wise) of grass fed, grass finished beef. The Horticultural Society of New York offers a Green Screen film series and the Hattie Cathan Community Garden’s Earth Day Council celebrates with an all-day market on Saturday.
On Sunday the New York Restoration Project will hold court in Union Square to with its fifteenth annual NYC Grows event which offers a full day of activities and presentations on community gardening, urban agriculture, sustainability, organic cooking and environmental education. Workshops on fermentation, tree planting and care, a butterfly exhibit, potting activities, gardening games, and a pop-up garden center will be ongoing through the day.
And best of all, round out the week at a gala celebration honoring Joan Gussow, the Movement Mariarch we profiled in our March-April issue. All proceeds from this swank event will support Just Food.
