Missed goa-taco’s super-flaky melt-in-your-mouth paratha tacos at Smorg. Jr. this year? Not to fear: they’ve opened a pop-up in the East Village, and they’ll be around for at least six weeks. The fusion dish combines Indian flatbread (a buttery layered affair similar to m’smen or a flattened croissant) with fillings from around the world — the current menu includes Mediterranean and Vietnamese-inspired tacos as well as Mexican classics. The pop-up will feature expanded offerings that range from slow-roasted lamb shoulder taco with tzatziki and eggplant salsa to churros made with paratha rolled with hazelnut, melted chocolate and mascarpone.
Chef and owner Duvaldi Marneweck comes to Manhattan from a fine dining background in Australia. He discovered the paratha taco one morning when he was running low on groceries. “I opened the fridge to only find paratha bread, eggs, and bacon — and so the goa-taco was born. I fried up some eggs, made some crispy bacon, [added] a little bit of mayo and put it all in the golden fried paratha bread.”
Drooling a little? He hopes to eventually add the original goa-taco to a weekend brunch menu. You can try your own goa-tacos during dinner hours at 79 Delancey Street.
