Twin Peaks to Make a Comeback, and We’re on the Hunt for Damn Good Cherry Pie in the Meantime


If you’re anything like me, the announcement of the return of Twin Peaks incited a furious twenty-minute Google image search to confirm that Kyle MacLachlan has aged gracefully, you still have to buy cable to subscribe to Showtime, and that yes, the dream sequence with the red velvet curtains, “the midget,” and Laura Palmer’s terrifying prophecy did air twenty-five years before 2016, when the show will actually return. Then you poured yourself a cup of damn good coffee, took a deep breath, and settled in for a long winter of re-watching the early seasons until True Detective comes back.

The announcement also prompted me to raid my freezer for any cherries I may have frozen and forgotten about after this year’s painfully short cherry season— I wanted to recreate agent Dale Cooper’s favorite snack , cherry pie. Retroactively disappointed at my inability to save just a few cherries from summer’s harvest, I hunted down a few appetizing slices around the city.

Although Four & Twenty Blackbirds was the Paley Center’s choice for the Damn Good Twin Peaks Screening in March, their fall menu sadly does not include any cherries. However, I do think Dale Cooper v.2014 could get down with the idea of eating seasonally; he’d probably enjoy the stone fruit crumble or the salted caramel apple.

Twin Peaks purists can also find an excellent sour cherry pie at Bubby’s in Tribeca. Anyone who exercised self-control during cherry season and squirreled a few away can find a wonderful recipe for Mary Cleaver‘s clafoutis (which is close to a cherry pie) in the New Greenmarket Cookbook.
