Let’s go to Newport. Those four little words hold so much magic. For many New Yorkers dreaming of a weekend escape, the Hamptons, the Berkshires or the Hudson Valley come first to mind. But roughly the same distance, up the coast, lies all the makings for a dreamy weekend getaway. Beach? ✔️ Charming town? ✔️ Delicious food and drink? ✔️✔️✔️
As a child growing up in Connecticut, Newport, R.I., was an easy day trip. A place where my parents had no qualms about letting us wander up and down the streets by ourselves. (Note to parents, if you can’t find your kids there’s a magic shop you should check). In my early 20s the beach town was the setting of too many girls’ weekends to count. Today, it remains a favorite escape for both romantic getaways with my husband and leisurely weekends with friends.
Kiss your watch goodbye for a weekend. You’re on beach time.
Where to Stay
From the Marriott to Gurney’s Newport outpost to home rentals, there are a plethora of options for every type of traveler. Personally, I’d go with the rental. Look for a place in town where you can walk to shops and restaurants and depending on the location you’ll also be only about a mile from Easton Beach (aka First Beach), which for most New Yorkers is not a bad walk.
What to Do
Beach. Head to Easton’s Beach, also known as First Beach, and soak in the sun and surf. If you’re staying in town, you can walk to the beach along the scenic Cliff Walk, which takes you past the summer “cottages” of the Roosevelt’s and Vanderbilt’s that date back to the Gilded Age.
Newport Mansions. Step back in time with a tour of some of the famous summer “cottages.” The Breakers is one of my favorites.
Shop. Whether you just want to window shop or are searching for a bit of Newport to take home, strolling through town (ice cream cone in hand) and popping in and out of Newport’s various shops is one my favorite ways to spend an afternoon.
Where to Eat and Drink
Castle Hill Inn. If you only have one cocktail in Newport, it should be while sitting on the lawn of this stunning historic hotel. Both Grace Kelly and Thornton Wilder were fans.
Midtown Oyster Bar. Grab a spot on one of the two decks and slurp down local oysters.
Dels. It’s the iconic cold treat of Rhode Island, and no trip to the state is complete without having at least one.
Salvation Cafe. A local favorite, the funky atmosphere, tiki-inspired drinks and no-fuss food is a must for anyone looking for a laid-back meal.
White Horse Tavern. Calling all history buffs: This cozy spot is the oldest bar in America.
The Red Parrot. In the center of it all, the three-story Red Parrot is a great place for families or anyone with some picky eaters in their group.
