Next Tuesday night, May 15th, is a big one for Robert La Valva, the director and founder of New Amsterdam Market, and he’d like you to join him. The market currently hosts food sellers and farmers from the region each Sunday on the waterfront just north of South Street Seaport, but next week La Valva presents a proposal to the Seaport and Civic Center Committee of Manhattan Community Board One. His goal is to house New Amsterdam Market year-round within the old Fulton Fish Market buildings you see above.
“Community Board One was instrumental in launching our campaign for the Fulton Fish Market through its Resolution of September 19, 2006,” says La Valva. He believes public support is needed to move the market foward–in his view, to becoming “a great Public Market of the world, in an iconic public site”–and that means your presence. “The more people who show up,” he says, “the more we stand a chance of making something really great out of the old Fulton Fish Market.” If you’d like to attend, save the date of May 15th–the meeting will likely be around 6 pm in Lower Manhattan–and let La Valva know at rsvp@newamsterdammarket.org and stay tuned to New Amsterdam’s site for more details.
